PDF to QR code
PDF to QR code: make a code that opens your PDF
Upload a PDF and FileSeen gives you a QR code ready to print. Anyone who scans it with a phone camera reads the PDF straight away, and you can see how often it was opened.
How to make a QR code for a PDF
PDF to QR code in three steps
The QR code points to a link FileSeen hosts, so the PDF does not have to fit inside the code.
-
Step 1
Upload your PDF
A menu, a brochure, a price list, lecture notes: any PDF up to 95 MB.
-
Step 2
Save the QR code
Confirm your email with the code, then save the QR code image and place it in your design.
-
Step 3
Print and let people scan
A phone camera opens the PDF in the browser. There is no app to install.
Printing a QR code for a PDF
The QR code is a PNG image with black squares on white, which is what phone cameras read most reliably. QR codes follow an international standard, ISO/IEC 18004, set out by Denso Wave, the company that invented them, so every phone camera app can read them. A few habits help it scan first time:
- Print it at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) wide, larger if people will scan it from a distance, such as on a poster.
- Keep a clear white margin around the code and do not place it on a busy background.
- Add a short line next to it, such as "Scan for the menu", so people know what they will get.
- Scan the printed proof with your own phone before printing many copies.
What happens when someone scans it
The phone opens the PDF in its browser, page by page, sized to the screen. PDFs are view-only by default, and you can allow downloads from the stats page.
Static and dynamic QR codes
A static QR code holds the final address itself: it can never be changed, tracked or switched off. A dynamic QR code holds a short address that forwards to the content, which is what lets a service count scans and stop the code later. A FileSeen code is the second kind in practice: it holds your link, so every scan is counted as an open, and the link can be given a password, an expiry date or deleted without reprinting anything.
Keep the code and the file in step
The QR code opens your link for as long as the link exists. If you delete the link or it expires, scanning the code shows a page saying the link is not available or has expired, so plan the expiry date around how long the printed copies will be in use.
See how often your QR code is scanned
A scan of the code is an open of the link, so the stats page tells you whether the printed QR code is being used, day by day.
Every link comes with a private stats page. It shows how many times the file was opened, which countries the opens came from, where the visitors arrived from, how many downloads there were and, for documents, the total reading time. You also get an email every time the link is opened, or one daily summary if you prefer. See what the stats page tracks.
Your own visits do not count: the link FileSeen gives you to check the file is marked as a preview, so it never shows up as an open.
FAQ
PDF QR code questions
How do I make a QR code for a PDF?
Upload the PDF at the top of this page, confirm your email with the 6-digit code, and save the QR code image that appears. Print it or add it to a slide.
Is the PDF QR code free?
Yes. The free plan includes 3 links, each with its QR code, plus the scan and open counts.
Does the QR code expire?
The code itself never changes. It keeps opening your PDF until you delete the link or until an expiry date you choose.
Can I see how many people scanned it?
You can see how many times the link was opened, on which days and from which countries. FileSeen counts opens, not individual people.
Do people need a QR scanner app?
No. The camera app on current phones reads QR codes and opens the PDF in the browser.
QR codes for a specific job
The steps are the same for every file, but what you upload and where the code goes depend on the job. These guides cover the common ones:
- Flyer QR code: put the full event details behind a scan on a printed flyer.
- Resume QR code: link a printed resume to your portfolio and know when it is opened.
- Menu QR code: your restaurant menu on any phone, from a table tent or the door.
- Coupon QR code: an offer that opens on any phone and ends on the date you pick.
- Magazine QR code: take a printed story further with maps, photos and extras.
- Newsletter QR code: from a one-page notice to the full edition and past issues.
- Instructions QR code: keep the full manual one scan away from the product.
- Donation QR code: a one-page appeal and every way to give, from a poster or event table.
