File size limits for email and chat apps

How big a file each app lets you send, read from the app's own help page and dated. When a file is over the limit, send it as a link instead.

Every limit on one page

Last checked on 23 October 2026. Pick an app for what happens when a file is over its limit and what the app suggests instead.

How these limits are checked

Every figure here is read from the app's own help or support page, never from a blog or a forum, and the page was saved on the date shown so the figure can be checked against it. Limits change, so each figure is checked again against the app's help page at least every two months, and the date moves when it is.

Two things to keep in mind. Work and school accounts often follow rules set by an administrator, so the limit there can be lower or higher than the one an app publishes for personal accounts. And a limit usually covers everything attached to one message together, not each file on its own.

When the file is too big

A link gets around any limit under 95 MB, because the message carries only a short address. Upload the file above, then paste the link. For PDFs, see PDF too large to email, or shrink the file first with the free PDF compressor.

FAQ

File size limit questions

Where do these limits come from?

Each figure is read from the app's own help page, on the date shown next to it. The link in the table goes to that page.

Which of these apps allows the biggest file?

Of the apps on this page, Google Drive allows the most: 5 TB (Storing one file in Drive, file types other than Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites and Vids). Gmail allows the least: 25 MB.

What can I do when a file is over the limit?

Upload it to FileSeen and paste the link into your message instead. One file can be up to 95 MB, video excepted, and the free plan has every feature on 3 links.
