What FileSeen collects, why, where it is kept and how to delete it. Last updated 18 October 2026.
Who runs FileSeen
FileSeen is a file sharing service run from Sangrur, Punjab, India. For anything about your data, email hello@fileseen.com.
What is collected when you share a file
- Your email address. You confirm it with a 6-digit code before your link goes live. It is how your account is identified, and where the code, your link and open alerts are sent.
- The file you upload and its file name. The link address is made from the file name.
- Your IP address and browser details at upload time, and a random device identifier kept in your browser. These are used to stop abuse and to apply rate limits, for example how many uploads one device can make in an hour.
- Your link settings, such as a password (stored only as a one-way hash), an expiry date and whether downloads are allowed.
- If you choose Pro, your name, your country and the plan you picked. No card or payment details are asked for or stored.
- How you reached Pro: a random identifier kept in your browser, and records of viewing the pricing, starting and finishing the Pro step, with the country worked out from your IP address and the page or campaign that sent you. These stay in FileSeen's own database and are used only to understand which parts of the site help people.
What is collected when someone opens a link
When a person opens a FileSeen link, the owner of the link can see that it was opened. For each open, FileSeen records:
- the time of the open and whether it was a view or a download;
- the country, worked out from the visitor's IP address;
- the website the visitor came from, if their browser shares it;
- for documents, which pages were viewed and roughly how long each was on screen;
- a one-way hash of the IP address, used to tell repeat visits apart. The IP address itself is not stored with the open.
Visitors do not need an account, and FileSeen does not ask visitors who they are.
The email image (approximate email opens)
If a link is added to an email with the FileSeen extension, a tiny image can go with it. When an email app loads that image, FileSeen records the time, the type of email app (for example Gmail's image service or Apple Mail), and the country for direct loads. No IP address, user agent, recipient address or email content is stored. Email apps load images in different ways, so this is shown to the sender only as an approximate signal. It is deleted with the link.
The free tools that run in your browser
The tools to password-protect a PDF, make a password-protected zip and watermark a PDF work entirely in your browser. The files you choose and the passwords you type are not sent to FileSeen or anyone else, and nothing about them is stored.
Cookies and browser storage
FileSeen uses a small number of cookies that the service needs to work: one keeps you signed in after you confirm your email, one remembers that you entered the password for a protected link, and one marks your own preview visits so they are not counted as opens. The uploader keeps a random device identifier in your browser's local storage. There are no advertising cookies. Pages on fileseen.com use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits: it sets no cookies and does not identify you or follow you to other sites.
Where your data is kept
- Files are stored on Cloudflare R2, encrypted at rest. Cloudflare also carries all traffic to fileseen.com and fileseen.page over HTTPS.
- Account and open records are kept in a database on FileSeen's own server in Europe.
- Emails (codes, link receipts and open alerts) are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service.
- Fonts on fileseen.com load from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when it serves them.
- The document viewer on fileseen.page loads its PDF engine from cdnjs.cloudflare.com. Some Office files may be shown through Microsoft's online viewer, which then fetches the file to display it.
How long it is kept, and deleting it
- You can delete a link at any time from its stats page. That removes the file, the link and its open records.
- A link with an expiry date stops working on that date, and its files are removed within the hour.
- An upload that is never confirmed with the email code is removed after one day.
- To delete your account and everything linked to it, use Delete account in your dashboard's Account section, or email hello@fileseen.com from the address on the account.
What FileSeen does not do
- Your data is never sold or rented to anyone.
- Your files are not used for advertising or to train anything.
- Visitors to your link are not tracked across other websites.
Abuse reports
If a FileSeen link is being used for fraud, phishing or anything harmful, report it from the report page. Reported links may be reviewed and removed.
